Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such drugs should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
